This is a very interesting article
that I think everyone would like, especially the runners. This guy has written a book about the Tarahumara Indians and I don't know if this an excerpt or
not. His name is Christopher McDougall.

Keith, I'm pretty sure this is the same tribe that's been written up in Runner's World magazine before. They told the story of one American who
apparently gave up life here and just moved there to life their lifestyle. A search on the Runner's World magazine web site might turn up some more

That is a great article. I had decided a while back I am going to get some of those Nike Free shoes when I wear out my current running shoes. I think the Free
would be good for running and the Chuck Taylors are good for lifting.
I wish they had talked more about their diet. I realize they eat the gruel with most meals, but I wonder what else they eat. And, actually, how they get the ingredients for their soup, whether they grow it themselves (which is what I would assume), gather in the woods, or what. I have done a little bit of study of those tribes on the "edges of civilization." A book about this same sort of thing is called Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. I will admit it is something of a tough read, but a very good book about nutrition and the pitfalls of the modern diet. Focus on big lifts, everything else will take care of itself. |

Steve, the guy you are talking about is mentioned in that article. The Indians call him Cabbalo Blanco.
SH, The guy who wrote the article does have a book coming out on the Tarahumara, maybe that will contain more about their diet. You might also try googling the name of the tribe. I have just recently started barefoot running and I like it. I tried the Chi or Pose running style of landing on the forefoot with my running shoes, but the heel is too thick to allow my Achilles to stretch. I haven't heard too much about the Nike Frees, but some of the barefoot runners use Aqua shoes or the Foot Glove when it gets cold. Keith

I recently bought the book, "Born to Run", and finished it yesterday. A quick and easy read, though it tends to jump around a little. The culmination
of the book is this mountain race between the Tarahumara runners and some elite ultra runners from the US, most notably, Scott Jurek. The author meets quite a
group of unique characters along the way. He also presents some compelling evidence of man evolving as a long distance runner.
I got the book online and even with shipping it was less then $20. I think that most people, especially runners, would find this book interesting. Keith
